BIGGER THAN THE BEATLES? Why No-One's Done It... Yet

When The Beatles hit the heights of Beatlemania worldwide in the 1960s, they set a new standard for rock superstardom that has still never been beaten or even equalled. So CAN they actually be beaten? And if so... how? Many images and videos in my UA-cam content have been found online without any attribution or credit available. So they where your standard rock band. These guys where a huge influence on what became the distorted guitar. Without the kinks you don't have punk rock or heavy metal. I understand getting hit with equipment. The band I was in back in 02 to 06 was loading up equipment after a show. A disgruntled girl I wouldn't hook up with hit me in the back of the head with a ride cymbal stand. Tours are wild. Good times

Hi Great video, well explained. Two things I would like to add. Im a massive Beatles fanatic and have loved them since i was 10 in 78 but I do think they were also a product of their time, what I mean is. In 1963 there was no internet, computer games, phones etc even TVs were not in every home, the main sources of entertainment were Movies, Dances and music, so people had a lot more time on their hands to go to airports to see them off. The other thing was, you said solo Beatles songs never eclipsed the Beatles, technically that is wrong, in the UK anyway. Mull of Kintyre is the biggest selling single in the UK ever, excluding charity singles Band aid and Elton johns Diana tribute. It outsold I want to hold your hand and She loves you the two biggest Beatle sellers. One thing is for sure the Beatles are the biggest and the best and probably will never be toppled now

Stitch up. The Americans didn't want ' Gurl, you really got me now... I don't know what I'm doing'. They were at war in Vietnam paranoid about 'Commies', and they didn't want some 'scruffy' British 'trouble makers' stirring the kids to rebel. Having 'long hair' could get you threatened with a pistol. Different times.

I find their earlier music pretty good, nice harmonies, etc. However, from mid-career to their last album, they teleported to another level. To me, it's the combination of Brian, Paul, John, Ringo, George Harrison, and George Martin was the magic formula. The parts by themselves could never match the combination, but were still pretty good when they went solo. Especially John, with songs like Imagine, Cold Turkey, Working Class Hero, Jealous Guy, and Beautiful Boy.

My Dad , Paul Desmond , a Comedian worked with Dean Martian , Sinatra and was Elvises opening act in 56- 57 . All of them mentioned select girls being hired to flip out at shows and even standard media appearances . This gave the singers the required to😢 momentuem toward stardom , However the great acts were able to keep the excitement going from there .

Born in 1954, I was caught up in Beatlemania and followed their careers both as a band and then as individuals. For half a century I rated them as the best band in the world without question. In latter years, however, I began delving deeper into ABBA's music catalogue - having only been aware of their substantial number of hits during the 70's. What I discovered changed my opinion. As this guy suggests, musical preferences are subjective - but these days I much prefer listening to ABBA albums than the Beatles offerings. As an Aussie I saw ABBA mania first hand and though I was not crazy over them at that point, it certainly appeared that the rest of the country was. Bands are a product of their time and the importance of The Beatles can never be overstated. Indeed I have heard Benny & Bjorn refer to them as the musical gods. But at the end of the day I judge all music based on how pleasant it is to the ear, the intelligence of lyrics and the emotions that it stirs. ABBA win all those aspects from my perspective.

In theory it could happen, the reach of an artist or a band is truly worldwide now. There are more people too, esp more people with the means to purchase something. China and India both with over a 1 billion people, Middle East and Africa full of young people. Maybe an artist or a band could appear that changes everything, I think we are overdue some cultural moment, currently we are recycling the same old ideas and everything really is starting to sounds the same - talking here about what is in the charts. This goes for film, and most of culture really. At the same we have these amazing indie bands either unsigned or on tiny labels breaking new ground you find them constantly on youtube and other sites. To get a new revolution in culture will probably take a disaster, afterall where did the Beatles come from, the generation of children who came from adults who lived through two world wars and a major depression.

Gm7 has F# in its voicing. As a solo performer you don't need to replicate the tonal dynamics of an ensemble. If you want to learn Noel or Boneheads guitar parts then play them as they are, if you want to play the bass then ditto.

I agree that Epstein knew how to present the Beatles, and he definitely played a huge part in their worldwide success, ultimately it was the music that was what set them apart. And, after ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ was played on the radio for the first time in the U.S., it exploded onto pop radio, bringing all the older records along. And along the way, they definitely pushed the envelope musically, keeping them up there at the top. To quote Voyle Gilmore, vice president of Capitol Records in 1964: “Sure there’s a lot of hype, but hype isn’t going to sell a bad product”. Just look what happened to MGM Records in 1968, when they hyped the Bossstown Sound. It flopped, leading eventually to the demise of the record company.

There are so many reasons why the Beatles are No. 1: - their explosion into a time and a world without fixed musical directions - their Songwriting abilities: According to Rolling Stone Magazine list number 2 (Paul), 3 (John) and 65 (George) of the best songwriters ever - their musical creativity: 12 Studio-Albums plus the Double-EP MAgicl Mystery Tour plus several special recordings plus som Live-Recordings, plus... in eight years... plus the songs they wrote for other musicians and bands... - their singing abilities: Although they couldn't hear themselves on stage due to the screaming of the fans - the monitoring was invented especially for their second US tour - I don't know of any live recording of false singing - their status as the role model for all the boy bands to come: four different characters, four young men with different abilities, - their musical progression inbetween the eight years. The way from "Love me do" (the album) to "Let it be" (the album) - their status as cultual trendsetters: Hippie culture withou the Beatles? Unimaginable! - their status as political trendsetters: John's fight for peace, Paul's fight for the protection of animals, Georges fight for social justice, - they were the ones who gained puplic acceptance in all social classes for rock and pop - they were the first to use eight-track recording - they crashed the doors and walls and made the British Invasion of the US possible - they were the first to use eastern elements like the sitar in pop and rock - an even marginally correct number of cover versions of their songs seems to be impossible And this is just only a part of what the Fab Four have done for rock and pop. And I do not even mention the many records they have set until today. Even today - 54 years after the official dissolution of the band - new releases, newly remastered recordings, documentaries and fictional stories by and about the Beatles inspire millions of audiences.

Elvis was as big as the Beatles. Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift are way smaller than the Beatles, even with the internet. Jackson might have had one album as the biggest album. However the Beatles had a lot more albums, that sold a lot. So the Beatles sold more records. The Beatles had the biggest concerts. They were the first to have stadium concerts.

This thesis is nonsense. All you have to do is compare the songs that were on the charts in 1964 with the Beatles songs from the same year. They perked your ears up and you were attracted and mesmerized, unlike anything that came before. Brian knew that he had something very special to sell and he sold it.

You can't say sold more or biggest concert because as time goes on there are more people. The Beatles were the first to play in a stadium . They are still the most covered artist by far ..No one has come close to all their accomplishment. Name one band that was ever had # one albums and singles one after another ,without touring..The Beatles did it for about 5 years after not touring ,until they broke up. Then all 4 continued to have very successful careers ,with # 1 singles and albums ..

@JamesHargreavesGuitar hello, I would say you're right that marketing is surely one of the reasons why they became famous. But there were so many brilliant marketing people behind many different groups and some of them are totally forgotten, some of them has one song known till now, some of them are still famous but till now much more due to the marketing than due to their music qualities or innovations ( here for me the biggest example is The Rolling Stones ). But I would say that Brian made the biggest job in the beginning... then if you really think about their music, how it developed in just 7-8 years, how many new things they brought to the music or recording... of course they had few more great people around them - George Martin, all the sound engineers, Billy Preston on Let It Be... but even if I would be very strict and pick up just songs which seems to me extra ordinary - there will be still a lot of them... and someone wrote them... and it wasn't Brian, George or anyone else... it was John, Paul and George... that's for me the point... and although they wrote most of the songs from 1967 alone, on many of them they still somehow cooperated and it's visible mainly if you compare White Album ( where the cooperation didn't work at all ) and Let It Be / Abbey Road where they again cooperated somehow... that's a big difference. And that is also the reason why none of them was so successful later on... but there are still amazing songs from each of them... so surely marketing is always something necessary in showbusiness but just with that the music of any band won't survive 60 years and be still one of the best in rock history. For example Radiohead is surely not such marketing product but one of the bands which will surely survive like Beatles do.

Well Paul went to Africa with Mal during the break after touring and the beginning of the next album. Initially it was to be about their growing up in Liverpool. That being the first concept. They did Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields for that but when they needed a single release that ended it. I believe Paul got the Pepper idea when he visited Jane Asher while she was touring in America in early April 1967.
